Exploring surfaces and texture as much as content, the latest collection of works on paper by abstract expressionist Allegra Gibson reflect a movement out into the world. Taking off from the narrative and character-based work she developed while completing graduate studies at CCA, Gibson conceptualizes the sensuality of dance, the physicality of the natural world and revelry of movement via free-form expressionist paintwork, ink pours and shiny objects. Deconstructed and re-imagined disco balls, landforms and wildlife are evoked rather than rendered, in emotive expressions of color and light that reflect her considerations with freedom of body and mind.
